Aldea Vásquez
is a village in the county of Totonicapán, located on the west side
of the mountains, just below the Pan American highway. K'iche' is the Mayan group that live in Totonicapán. The language is also called K'iche'. Their second language is Spanish, and many of the children are learning English as well. The women wear Cortes, which are skirts made locally on a wooden loom. Many of the people in Vásquez are weavers. The women tie the skirts with fajas, a type of woven belt, and wear juipiles or blusas. The men wear modern "western" dress. The altitude varies from 8,000 - 9,000 feet depending on where you are in the village. We are approximately at the 15th parallel. Even though we are so close to the equator the temperature is cooler and stays moderate do to the elevation.
Mission Statement Col 1:28a "Proclaim Him"- Jesus. That is the focus in all we do. Sharing the love of God opens up many opportunities to serve the people in our area. We believe "love God, love on another" and help people be prepared to serve as God calls them to in different jobs and also in different areas of Guatemala and other parts of the world.
